WATCH: Arizona Democrats and Reproductive Freedom For All Arizona Condemn Republicans' Push for Personhood Legislation, Warning of Threats to IVF

Today, Arizona Democrats and Reproductive Freedom for All held a press call discussing Arizona Republicans' role in pushing “personhood” legislation at the state and federal levels. “Personhood” legislation has the potential to jeopardize IVF  and ban abortion. “Personhood” legislation led to the Supreme Court ruling in Alabama which effectively halted IVF access for families in their state.

Read highlights from the event below:

  • Chairwoman Yolanda Bejarano: “Arizona is the next abortion battleground- from enshrining abortion rights in our state constitution via ballot initiative, flipping the US House, securing the Senate, and once again delivering the White House for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.”

  • Chairwoman Yolanda Bejarano: “Kari Lake supports abortion bans without exceptions for rape or incest for Arizonans, she believes that “life begins at conception,” she celebrated the fall of Roe, she’s called abortion an “execution,” and wants to see a total ban on medication for abortions. Now that Arizonans are clearly saying abortion access is critical to them, Kari is trying to lie her way out of her dangerous agenda. But we won’t be fooled.”

  • Reproductive Freedom for All Director of Arizona Campaigns, Athena Salman: “Look no further for proof of their extremism than Senate Republicans blocking an effort from Senate Democrats to federally protect in vitro fertilization (IVF) and other fertility treatments just last week.”

  • Reproductive Freedom for All Director of Arizona Campaigns, Athena Salman: “That’s exactly why we must send reproductive freedom champions to office up and down the ticket this November. We need Rep. Ruben Gallego in the U.S. Senate. We need Raquel Teran and Kirsten Engel in the House. And we need champions in the state legislature who will fight just as hard to protect and expand reproductive freedom here in our state.”

  • State Representative Stephanie Stahl Hamilton: “Personhood legislation, like the bills sponsored by Representative Matt Gress last session, could have spelled disaster for reproductive healthcare including IVF. Make no mistake: Every Republican in the House and Senate voted in support of fetal personhood legislation, the same type of legislation that opened the door for the ruling in Alabama. Republicans here in Arizona are complicit in a nationwide attempt to ban access to the range of reproductive health care, from contraceptives to abortion to IVF.”

  • State Representative Stephanie Stahl Hamilton: For the sake of Arizona families, we cannot let them hold onto power for another year. We must flip the state legislature, and restore access to reproductive freedom once and for all.”
